THE MARIKANA MASSACRE WAS DELIBERATE. S.A. POLICE KILLED 34 AND INJURED 78 STRIKING MINERS. MANY WERE SHOT IN THE BACK &/or ON THE GROUND. RAZOR WIRE, SUB-MACHINE GUNS AND ARMOURED CARS. HORSES AND HELICOPTERS WERE USED. 270+ SURVIVORS WERE ROUNDED UP AND CHARGED WITH THE KILLINGS. WITNESSES ARE BEING REGULARLY MURDERED AS THE WHITEWASH OFFICIAL INQUIRY ROLLS ON. AFTER APARTHEID? The Global Political Economy of the Marikana Massacre.
In the Marikana Massacre (16th August 2012) 34 striking miners were deliberately shot dead (70+ injured) by the neo-colonial South Afrikan/Azanian state, run by the one-time liberation alliance (ANC-COSATU-SACP) acting in collusion with the UK-based multi-national company LONMIN. Such firms are gorging on Azania’s wealth extracted at a terrible cost to those working in notorious underground conditions for starvation wages. They live in notorious shack-townships. This massacre confirms that the ANC is running the world’s latest brutal neo-colony. “Black/ African Economic Empowerment” installed this ruthless class in South Afrika.
‘Neo-colonialism’ is the rule of ex-colonies using a local class/class fraction acting in its self-interest and that of racist capitalism-imperialism, now under so called ‘globalisation’ & guided by the half-crazy policies of neo-liberal finance capital. This system uses the older structures (UN Security Council, the Breton Woods set-up of World Bank, IMF+) and newer ones (Uruguay Round, WTO+). The neo-colonial class signed-up to the lie that this system is benevolent: with “aid donors”, neutral, necessary foreign direct investment, providers of protection (from “terrorism”, “drugs cartels” and “destabilisation”), bringers of the “efficiencies” of the international “free market” of privatisation (only the polluted air remains free), where every country supposedly enjoys its own “beneficial, equitable competitive advantage”.

Neo-colonialism began in 1820s Haiti after the Haitian Revolution. Liberia was not far behind. Neo-colonialism spread in 19th century Latin America; then to Asia & Africa in the long ‘independence’ era (Ethiopia – 1941 – to Azania/South Africa -1994).
LONMIN shows up the MNCs busy disembowelling our countries, demolishing & exporting our mountains; driving our people from their land and fishing grounds; some land leased for pittances to all comers. Oil, gas, minerals extracted leaving ruined landscapes – as in the Niger Delta. Jamaica’s main watershed came close to being dug down for bauxite. Cell phone MNCs have their hands almost directly in the pockets of poor people.

Nothing is more important now than to understand this moment in world-wide oppression through imperialist neo-colonialism. Unreserved support must be given to those in the worldwide struggle against it. Above all, the way must be found to defeat a monstrous enemy with its deceptive new face.
